How battery figures are labeled
Every EV listing shows a battery figure, labeled so you can tell them apart:
- Tested is a battery capacity test on file for that exact VIN. 0 of the 3 EVs shown here have one.
- Estimated from displayed range (shown as “Displayed range”) compares the range that exact car shows at a full charge with its original EPA rating. It is a calculation for that VIN, not a lab test. 0 of 3.
- Typical estimate (shown as “Est. ~X%”) is the typical figure for a car of that model, age and mileage from published fleet data (TeslaTracker for Teslas, sharpened with its per-trim figures; Geotab for other EVs). It is not a measurement of the car itself, and you can request a report. 3 of 3.
- Similar Teslas display is the full-charge range comparable used Teslas show (same trim, year and mileage), from TeslaTracker, with how many cars it is based on. It describes similar cars, not that one. 0 of 3.
Used Tesla Model X buying guide
The Model X is Tesla's full-size SUV, known for its upward-opening falcon-wing rear doors and seating for five, six or seven depending on configuration. It went on sale for the 2016 model year, was sold under battery-size names like 75D, 90D and 100D, and later as Long Range, Performance and Plaid. A refreshed version with a new interior arrived for the 2021 model year.
Range, battery and charging
Each listing labels its battery figure as a battery test result, the full-charge range the car displayed when we recorded it, or a typical estimate for its age and mileage. Only a test measures the battery itself.
Teslas use Tesla's charge port, standardized as SAE J3400 (often called NACS), and can use Tesla's Supercharger network, billed through the Tesla app. At home, a Level 2 (240-volt) circuit is the usual setup.
What to check on a used Tesla Model X
- Check the battery figure on the listing and how it is labeled: tested, displayed range, or an estimate for age and mileage.
- Open and close both falcon-wing doors and the powered front doors several times, and watch the sensors stop them near obstacles.
- Check the seating layout matches what you need, and test second-row seat movement.
- Watch the air suspension raise and lower, and check tire wear.
- Test both AC and DC charging if you can.
Warranty basics
Under Tesla's current terms the Model X battery and drive unit are covered for 8 years or 150,000 miles with at least 70% battery capacity retained; a Model X bought new under earlier terms keeps the battery warranty that applied when it was first sold. Tesla's Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage counts from the car's first delivery and transfers to later owners at no cost.
Financing, trade-ins and test drives
Example Motors offers financing: you can start a credit application online, and approval, rates and terms come from the lender. We take trade-ins of any make and model and also buy cars outright, and you can submit your car online for an appraisal.
Test drives happen at the store where the car is: Springfield at 100 Main Street ((555) 010-0100), open Mon to Fri 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Sat 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Sun Closed. Each listing shows its store; call ahead so the car is ready when you arrive.
